Jurgen Klopp admits he thought about giving ‘special’ teenager his debut for Liverpool last night

Last night will go down as a special game in what has been a special season for Liverpool so far. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds came back in emphatic fashion against Luton Town, scoring four goals in the second-half.

The scoreline itself may not be anything extraordinary. Liverpool after all are expected to win big against Luton Town. However, the manner of the performance was special. This game has to be put into context. Liverpool were missing so many big guns, Klopp had to field a team that were full of players who would be expected to start on the bench if everyone was fit.

On top of that, they were coming up against a Luton Town side who had not lost by three goals or more in a Premier League game since August. Luke Edwards’ side have been really hard to beat even for the top teams in the league this season.

Yet, for Liverpool none of this seemed to matter. Klopp’s players rose to the challenge and delivered a magnificent performance in the second half.

Jurgen Klopp on Trey Nyoni

Liverpool’s game against Luton was also historic. It was the first time Liverpool had fielded seven players aged 21 or younger in a league game in the club’s entire history. And it could have been even more.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Jurgen Klopp admitted he considered giving a debut to 16-year-old Trey Nyoni as well, who has sat on the Liverpool first team bench several times this season.

“Some of the kids started, the others came on, and they did an incredible job,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s cool how a culture educates the next generation, to be honest. Yes Curtis is injured in the moment, but I said a few weeks ago: if Curtis Jones can learn defending, everybody can learn defending.

“If you see Bobby Clark and James McConnell, oh my god. And Trey, sitting outside, and you think ‘maybe we bring him [on]?’, just because the boys are that good.

“But in general, how the stadium and the team together changed that game was just exceptional.”

After Jayden Danns made his debut last night, Nyoni definitely seems like the next one to make his Anfield bow. He’s been making impressive strides all season at academy level. He’s also recently been described as a ‘special’ talent alongside other academy players by Klopp.
