Pundit admits he’s said something ‘really harsh’ about 24-year-old Liverpool player this season

There’s one player at Liverpool who divides a lot of opinion. Even amongst the club’s supporter base. You either love him or hate him. Darwin Nunez is very much the definition of football’s and Liverpool’s very own marmite.

The 24-year-old Uruguayan is capable of the utterly sublime, such as his goal against Brentford last weekend. But he’s also capable of the exact opposite. This season he has already collected a compilation of misses that will entertain rival fans for years to come.

Yet none of those misses seems to matter. Because one way or another, Nunez makes an impact on the pitch. He contributes with goals and assists on a regular basis and he is a constant threat. It doesn’t matter that he misses an open goal, when he scores an absolute world-class finish a few minutes later. Although if he can work on the side of his game, to put away simpler chances, Liverpool would have an even better and more terrifying forward.

What Jay Bothroyd has said about Darwin Nunez

Speaking on the Optus Sports Football Podcast, Jay Bothroyd went into an analysis of Darwin Nunez after his performance against Brentford. The former player turned pundit admitted that he has been quite ‘harsh’ with the Liverpool forward this season.

“I’ve been really harsh, I say harsh, I’ve been really hard on Nunez because I don’t think he’s a clinical striker for me,” Bothroyd said.

“He’s a striker that shoots, but there’s a difference between a striker that shoots and a finisher, you all know that.

“Now, when he’s running through on goal there, I don’t know what’s going to happen. Is he going to score? I don’t know. I’ve seen him go around the keeper and hit the post, but, he finished that really, really well.”

We can understand Bothroyd being harsh on Nunez. We are certain Nunez has been harsh on himself as well at times this season. There are undoubtedly situations where the Uruguayan could do a lot better. But that is part and parcel of his development. He isn’t the finished article yet.

There’s much more to come from him as he adjusts to Liverpool and life in the Premier League. He’s already developing and improving everyday. On the pitch, he is getting better and better as well.
