‘World-class’… Jermaine Defoe says one Liverpool player really reminds him of Kevin de Bruyne

For many years now, Kevin de Bruyne has set the standards in the Premier League. When it comes to creative players, De Bruyne stands head and shoulders above the best. He is the type of player who can unlock any defence, no matter how stubborn and unyielding they may be.

The Belgian has often made the difference for Manchester City in the Premier League title race as well. Much to Liverpool’s dismay. Who knows how many league titles Pep Guardiola’s side would have really won without De Bruyne’s contributions.

But according to Jermaine Defore, Liverpool may have a De Bruyne of their own. Someone who has very much made the difference at crucial times this season. Someone who has been up there creatively alongside Kevin de Bruyne for many years now. Someone who Troy Deeney has also deemed as world-class.

Troy Deeney on Trent Alexander-Arnold

Speaking on The Players Channel, Jermaine Defore and Troy Deeney had a conversation about Trent Alexander-Arnold, and whether he was a world-class player. Deeney was quick to sing Alexander-Arnold’s praises.

“So question, is Trent Alexander-Arnold world-class? Yes,” Deeney said.

Jermaine Defoe then compared the Liverpool full-back to Kevin de Bruyne, describing his passing as very similar to the Manchester City star.

“His passing is world-class. His passing is like Kevin de Bruyne’s,” Defoe said.

“Forget that. Everyone is fixating, you know when you know someone is world-class when we try and find the thing they’re not good at and fixate on it. So Haaland, when they lose, they’re like, ah yeah he only had eight touches,” Deeney concluded.

It’s nice to see Trent Alexander-Arnold receiving this kind of recognition. Far too often he gets criticised or goes under the radar. But the truth is there are not many, if any, players in world football who can do what he does on the ball. That means he is world-class. There is no debate about it. Troy Deeney knows it. Jermaine Defore knows it. Deep down the whole world knows it. Try to name a better right-back than Alexander-Arnold. You’d struggle to come up with even one who is better than the Liverpool full-back.
