‘Really special’ Liverpool player is going seriously under the radar this season

When you look at this Liverpool team right now, even with all the injuries, Jurgen Klopp has a really strong squad. Full of young players who are yet to fulfil their potential but already playing at a high level.

Especially when we are looking at Klopp’s attacking ammunition. In attack, Klopp not only has the exciting Darwin Nunez, who just keeps scoring goals, now at a more prolific rate from open play than Erling Haaland, but also Cody Gakpo.

The Dutchman doesn’t always get the praise he deserves. But he is up there as one of the most exciting attackers in European football. Ever since he proved himself at the World Cup, and signed for Liverpool he has showed signs of that – and he’s only just getting started.

It’s difficult to forget he is still only 24-years-old. There’s so much potential in him to get even better. But already this season, Gakpo has been a really important player for Klopp. He’s also been someone who has gone under the radar a little bit.

Cody Gakpo is going under the radar this season

Against Brentford Cody Gakpo proved just how vital he is to Jurgen Klopp with a goal and an assist. Those two goal contributions now means that only Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez have provided more goals and assists than Gakpo for Liverpool this season.

The Dutchman is also impressively now averaging 0.65 goal contributions per 90 in the Premier League. He’s got seven goal contributions in total in the league. That’s a really solid number from a player who has only started 10 games so far. Especially considering he has played seven games as a central midfielder as well, rather than in his own preferred attacking role.

Meanwhile, in other competitions that he has featured in more often and in his preferred position, Gakpo has been firing in the goals. In the Europa League, he has four goal contributions in four games, and in the League Cup he has four goals in five games.

Those are seriously impressive numbers, and it’s a little bit of a surprise that Gakpo hasn’t received the recognition he deserves. As Jurgen Klopp said after Liverpool’s game against West Ham this season, Gakpo is ‘really special.’
