There’s been a lot of talk about the brilliance of Mohamed Salah, the enigma of Darwin Nunez and the prolific nature of Diogo Jota at Liverpool this season. However, one player is really going under the radar.

Cody Gakpo has been in the shadows of the aforementioned players. Yet quietly he is going about his business in a really impressive way this season.

The 24-year-old Dutch international has three goal contributions in his last four games, and when you spread out his whole season – he has been even more impressive. His current stats are on par with players like Victor Osimhen even.

Cody Gakpo on par with Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen is one of the most sought after forwards in European football at the moment. The Nigerian Napoli forward has been in exquisite form this season as well, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move to the Premier League for big money in the future.

However, while Osimhen has been brilliant, Gakpo has actually matched his goal contributions on a per 90 basis this season.

Gakpo currently averages 0.75 goal contributions per 90 for Liverpool in all competitions this season – that’s the same amount as Osimhen for Napoli. In fact, if we take away penalties scored, Osimhen is only on 0.68 goal contributions per 90.

Now this is not to suggest that Gakpo is better than Osimhen by any stretch of the imagination – it just serves as a reminder of what Liverpool already have.

The fact that his goal output has gone so under the radar also highlights just how much ammunition Jurgen Klopp has at his disposal in attack right now.
