I am convinced I have seen who will replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, he’s completely special

This was a different setting from the glimmering lights of Anfield. Last summer, I was in Hungary, sitting in the press section of the Nandor Hidegkuti Stadium in Budapest. It was the U17 European Championship, and I am convinced I was watching a star being born.

During my career I have seen plenty of players make their mark in this tournament. From Dominik Szoboszlai scoring a last-minute winner against Erling Haaland’s Norway back in 2017 to watching Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho lighting up the show for England. The U17 European Championship is simply the tournament to announce yourself on the biggest stage for aspiring young footballers.

And during the 2023 tournament hosted in Hungary, there was a clear star, who did exactly that. Who I was so convinced by, I now want him to one day replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool. He was simply very special. The kind of talent you don’t really see often. The kind of talent who already had the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and put fans on the edge of their seats.

Lamine Yamal is on Liverpool’s radar and he can replace Salah

One of Yamal’s best game at the tournament was in the Nandor Hidegkuti Stadium in the quarter-finals against the Republic of Ireland. Yamal’s Spain won the game 3-0, with Yamal scoring an incredible goal, cutting onto his left foot from the right – in typical Mohamed Salah fashion.

He was simply sensational at the tournament overall. In five games for Spain, Yamal scored four goals and registered two assists. And he tormented every opponent he faced.

By the time he came to Hungary, Yamal was already highly regarded and had made his debut for Barcelona’s first team. But since the tournament, he’s grown rapidly. He’s made his senior debut for Spain’s national team and has scored two goals in four international caps.

Meanwhile, he already has 10 goal contributions for Barcelona’s first team this season. For a 16-year-old that is simply exceptional. It’s no surprise that Liverpool are reportedly looking at him. Barcelona is a volatile place to be right now. So I’m convinced that in the future when Salah leaves the club, Yamal should be Liverpool’s number one target to replace him.
