Cody Gakpo has been quietly a good signing for Liverpool. He hasn’t necessarily taken Anfield by storm, but he has had his moments and he is constantly getting better and better.
Signed after a fantastic World Cup campaign and after posting some incredible numbers for PSV, he arrived at Anfield with an exciting promise. Now he’s been at the club for just over a year. In that time he has already scored 16 goals for Liverpool and registered seven assists. He’s roughly averaging a goal contribution every 155 minutes on the pitch.
It’s not exactly setting the world alight numbers, but they’re not bad on paper. Certainly, there is room for him to get even better. And as Gakpo has revealed, he is constantly improving in training. Including in one especially key area.

Cody Gakpo on the new record he set
Now speaking on the Carabao Cup’s official Twitter account, Gakpo revealed he has recently improved his top speed in training. And in return, he has become the fourth fastest player at the club.
“Wait a minute,” Gakpo said. “I just did top speed the other day, new record. So now I’m in top four of the team. Just want to add that on.”
We have to admit; we are a little surprised by Gakpo’s revelation. He doesn’t come across as super explosive on the pitch. Although that may be down to the positions he has been playing in. A lot the time he has been asked to play that Firmino role – dropping into midfield and not playing in behind the defenders – that doesn’t require as much acceleration.
However, it’s good to see that he seems to have that in his locker as well. And also that he is still looking to improve himself and get better.
