Liverpool are always exploring possible transfer moves. Last summer the club were especially keen on bringing a couple of new midfielders to the club. At the time there was a major overhaul in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield. An overhaul that has long been in the making.

It saw several key players leave. Including Fabinho, club captain Jordan Henderson and vice captain, James Milner. The massive overhaul meant Liverpool were very much shopping around in the window to try to find other potential midfield targets who could come in.

There were plenty of players linked with the club. But in the end, the four players Liverpool did bring in were Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo. Although if the latest reports are to be believed – there could have been another potential new name at Anfield as well.

Liverpool wanted to sign Conor Gallagher

According to The Telegraph, last summer Liverpool made a move to sign England international, Conor Gallagher. However, his club at the time – Chelsea – refused the approach from Liverpool.

Gallagher is a talented midfielder. He’s a bit of a work-horse. In the Premier League, he has stood-out with his energy. That’s something that would have been a boost for Klopp’s gegenpressing style. However, in the end things worked out pretty well for Liverpool.

Gallagher after all is not a world-beater. He’s clearly got plenty of talent and was even praised as ‘fantastic’ by former Chelsea manager Graham Potter. However, as The Athletic reported at the time, Liverpool would have had to offer a fee in the region of £40m – which is just simply too much for a player of Gallagher’s quality. Especially, when Liverpool signed someone like Alexis Mac Allister, who is a World Cup winner, for less money.
