Liverpool have had some great success through their academy so far this season.
As Jurgen Klopp prepares to leave the club, he does so having fostered some exceptional local talent. When he departs this summer, he’ll go in the knowledge that there are a number of prospects ready to burst through.
One such player grabbing the headlines at the moment is striker Lewis Koumas. Son of former Wigan midfielder Jason, Koumas has been in terrific form for the underage sides. Something U21s coach Barry Lewtas backs up while speaking to liverpoolfc.com today.
“He is scoring for fun!” raved Lewtas, after the 18-year-old scored twice on Sunday.
“I’ve got to mention the two passes for his goals. The first, Calum Scanlon, and then Jayden Danns’ pass, they deserved to be finished. He took his goals ever so well.
“The runs in behind he makes, I wouldn’t want to play against him. He gives us a real outlet as well in terms of his runs, the way he competes and the way he dribbles. There were a few nice moments where he was bringing Bobby Clark in, so I thought Lewis was excellent.”
Koumas earning rave reviews
It was an excellent weekend for Koumas, who found himself in Klopp’s Premier League squad for the first time on Saturday.
The youngster didn’t get on in the end against Burnley, but it was an indication that he is most certainly in Jurgen’s thinking at the moment.
Koumas has struck up a real partnership with Jayden Danns this season and both players are deservedly training with the first-team at the moment.
With Mohamed Salah now also back in training, opportunities for young forwards may start to become a little less frequent.

As they go for all four trophies in Klopp’s final term, it may be harder for the manager to give chances to young players like Koumas.
Nevertheless, if the former Tranmere Rovers teenager can keep going the way he is, a debut will come at some stage.
By then, it feels possible that Klopp will have departed. But whoever the new manager is will surely want a progress report from Lewtas on the state of the academy.
Judging from his words today, he’ll only have positive things to say about Koumas. Keep it going, Lewis!
