Everyone is talking about Jurgen Klopp’s replacement at Liverpool at the moment. But it’s not just the German who has to be replaced at Anfield.
On the same day Klopp announced his decision to leave the club, it was also revealed that Jorg Schmadtke would be leaving his position. Klopp’s fellow German had been at the club for less than a year in a sporting director role. However, with Klopp no longer at the helm, it makes sense for Liverpool to move on from Schmadtke and find a long-term successor in a key position.
A key position which has been very volatile at Anfield in the last few years. Since Michael Edwards left the club in 2022, Liverpool have had two different sporting directors. One of them being Julian Ward, who left his position in 2023. And the other being Schmadtke of course.
But as the club now embarks on a new long-term project, there needs to be more clarity and structure in the boardroom. To establish that having a sporting director is essential.

Dan Ashworth on Liverpool’s radar
According to GiveMeSport Liverpool have Newcastle United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth on the club’s radar. The report claims that Ashworth is ‘liked’ by Liverpool.
He comes with an impressive track record. In the past Ashworth worked at Brighton, where he played a key role in the recruitment of Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorean was of course later sold on for a huge profit – in a memorable transfer saga.
But Ashworth has done a stellar job at Newcastle since arriving at the club, playing a key role in the recruitment which saw them return to the Champions League. Given Newcastle’s financial incentives, it would be hard to lure him away from the Magpies. However, if somehow Liverpool can find a way, Ashworth would be a shrew appointment.
