Liverpool weren’t great during the first-half of today’s game against Burnley at Anfield.
The Reds were slow out of the blocks and sluggish on the ball. They went in at half-time having relinquished a scarcely deserved one goal lead.
But there was still an important moment during the game’s opening 45 minutes. After whipping in the corner that Diogo Jota headed into the Burnley net, Trent Alexander-Arnold broke a Premier League record.
As per TNT Sports on X, Alexander-Arnold’s ball in for Jota made him the division’s highest-assisting defender of all time.
Sitting clear at the top on 58 assists, no one has quite done it like Liverpool’s No,66 over the past five or six years. At just 25, he’s only just getting started, too.
Alexander-Arnold goes clear at the top
Funnily, although he set the record during today’s game, there was always a chance that Alexander-Arnold would actually lose it over the course of the day.
Remarkably, Liverpool’s other full-back – Andy Robertson – sits just one behind Trent in the all-time list.
There’s no active player anywhere close to the Reds pair. So, as Robertson comes back into the side from injury, this will be an interesting little battle to watch between these two.
With Alexander-Arnold coming off at half-time, the Scotland captain had a free run at bringing himself level with his mate on the opposite wing.
In the end, he couldn’t manage it. But you can bet that Robertson will be desperate to make up for his lost time out of the side this campaign and draw level with Trent.

In the meantime, you really have to take your hat off to Alexander-Arnold. Yes, it sometimes feels a little borderline to call the England international a defender, but that’s still what he is.
If you ask Trent himself, he perhaps prefers to play in midfield. But so far, Jurgen Klopp has generally resisted the temptation to stick him in there.
No matter, he still affects games seemingly at will from right-back. Today was the latest example of that. Alan Shearer recently called him ‘out of this world‘ and he truly is something special.
Here’s to the next 58 to come.
