Xabi Alonso is everyone’s favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. It’s easy to see why. Alonso plays exciting attacking football. He’s already got the Liverpool DNA, having played for years at Anfield.
On top of that he’s got a proven recent track record of delivering success at a high level in the Bundesliga. His achievements this season have been especially impressive, with Alonso currently the only unbeaten manager in Europe’s top five leagues having gone 30 games now without defeat.
Alonso would bring change to Liverpool. He’s got ideas of his own. But he is the closest thing right now to a perfect Klopp replacement. There’s no surprises that he is also the fan’s favourite to succeed the German.

Xabi Alonso could save Fabio Carvalho’s future
One of the changes Alonso might make at Liverpool is a tweak in the system. Managers will have philosophies and systems that they adjust. Alonso’s core principles is possession of the ball. He balances this with aggressive pressing, and limiting the opponents’ time in possession.
To achieve his philosophy at Leverkusen Alonso deploys a 3-4-2-1 formation. He may not switch to this formation at Liverpool. He may end-up keeping the 4-3-3 system that has worked so well under Jurgen Klopp. However, if he does switch to a 3-4-2-1 system, then there is one player who could benefit from Alonso’s arrival.
Fabio Carvalho was described as an ‘outstanding’ talent by Jurgen Klopp. But he was never really favoured by the German. Despite some impressive performances during his first few months at the club, Klopp just couldn’t find a place for him in his system.
But under Alonso, that would change. Alonso’s system suits Carvalho’s style perfectly. Carvalho is best suited to a number ten role, and in Alonso’s system, there are two number tens who play on either side behind the striker. Carvalho could suit one of these roles perfectly, and it’s a system which could resurrect his Liverpool career and cement his future at the club.
Which is why Alonso could just be the key to Carvalho’s stay at Anfield. Currently, the youngster is doing very well on loan, and if he can continue his good form at Hull City, he should get the chance to impress whoever the new manager is in pre-season over the summer.
