There’s one Liverpool player who isn’t really being talked about a lot at the moment. Sepp van den Berg has been on the books at Liverpool for almost five years. But he’s still only 22-years-old, and very much considered a youngster. Especially when it comes to centre-backs, who tend to mature later on in their careers.

Of course, over the last few years, he has gone under the radar a little bit. That’s because Sepp van den Berg hasn’t really been around the club much. The last three years or so the Dutchman has spent on several loan spells. From Preston North End in the Championship to fighting against relegation with Schalke 04 and now Mainz in the Bundesliga.

But quietly he has been making impressive progress, and his performances this season have been especially noteworthy. Including another incredible performance last night against Union Berlin.

Sepp van den Berg’s incredible performance last night

Last night Sepp van den Berg Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, where his team was really put to the test. But Van den Berg stepped up to deliver an incredible performance.

The Liverpool loanee won all six of his duels, made 10 clearances – which was the most in the game for Mainz. On top of that, he won three out of his three attempted tackles, and two out of his two aerial duels. He also made 10 recoveries, which was again the most on the pitch for Mainz.

It’s pretty much a perfect defensive performance based on statistics. And it’s not a one off. Van den Berg has been in great form for the club all season. Lauded in the past by Lancashire Live for his ‘excellent’ loan spell at Preston North End, if this performance is anything to go by, we think he still definitely has a future at Anfield.
