‘Didn’t feel right’… Andy Robertson admits something ‘strange’ has happened to him at Liverpool this season

It has been fantastic to see Andy Robertson back out on the pitch for Liverpool over the past few weeks.

The 29-year-old is a real fan favourite at Anfield and it’s been strange not seeing him out there for a while. In his six-year Liverpool career, Robertson has very rarely been unavailable.

This is something that the Scotland captain acknowledged himself when speaking to liverpoolfc.com today, admitting that it ‘didn’t feel right’ to be watching from the side lines this season.

“When you come back it’s kind of strange, you don’t know what it’s going to be like,” Robertson says of his recent return against Norwich City.

“Obviously the atmosphere when I came on just reminded me how big a part I am of this club, and it was a nice feeling. I walked off that pitch feeling as if I was back and that was nice because, like I said, it was a long time [out injured], there were a lot of hard times during that, in terms of the surgery and things like that.

“And that was what just kept me going: I wanted to get back playing football, it didn’t feel right me having time off and being injured and being in the gym instead of out on the grass.”

Robertson back doing what he does best

Robertson has become such a feature of Liverpool’s team under Jurgen Klopp that it really has been odd not to have him around.

A massive personality in the dressing room, it must have been weird for his teammates, too.

Nevertheless, the Reds have coped brilliantly in Robbo’s absence. When the 29-year-old first got injured, Liverpool were still unsure exactly what kind of season they would have.

They had started relatively well, but after such a disappointing campaign last year, caution still remained.

Nearly four months on, and Liverpool have gotten themselves into a position where it can be a truly special season. Robertson will have been itching to get back and help out.

Now that he is available again, the former Hull City defender has had to be patient, though. Joe Gomez has been in terrific form and has locked down the left-back spot for himself.

Three substitute appearances have shown that Robertson is probably ready to take his position back now. We’d expect to see him get his first start in a Liverpool shirt since October on Saturday.

From there, let’s hope we see the form that has made Robbo such a firm favourite with the fanbase.

As one of the real flagship players of Klopp’s tenure, it would be great if he could play his part in sending the boss out with a bang.
