‘I couldn’t believe it’… Jamie Carragher was left stunned by what Jurgen Klopp did vs Arsenal

Things simply did not go Liverpool’s way against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. Jurgen Klopp’s men were out-matched, and out-played for 90 minutes straight. Yes, the Reds were ultimately the cause of their own downfall – making uncharacteristic errors – but take nothing away from the performance. This was a poor showing.

It was a game where Liverpool simply lacked energy. There was no impetus or drive on the pitch. Immediately from the first whistle Liverpool were hemmed back. And barring the first phase of the second-half, Arsenal always seemed to have the upper-hand in the match.

Perhaps one of the factors behind why Liverpool didn’t have as much energy in the game was that the Reds were missing two key players who often provide most of the energy on the pitch. We already wrote about one of them in Dominik Szoboszlai, who couldn’t start due to injury. But the other Jamie Carragher couldn’t believe why he didn’t start the game.

Jamie Carragher couldn’t believe Darwin Nunez decision

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher couldn’t believe that Darwin Nunez didn’t start the game against Arsenal. The former Liverpool defender revealed he was left astonished by Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave the Uruguayan on the bench.

“I said after the game Liverpool should have been a little bit more direct but they missed the power of Nunez. When this ball was going forward – that was the right decision [to play long] – but without Nunez they didn’t have the power to hold it up,” Carragher explained.

The presenter then added: “It was a surprise he didn’t start.”

Before Carragher chimed in again:

“I couldn’t believe it. But listen, we can’t complain too much with Jurgen Klopp, we will give them the night off!”

Darwin Nunez of course had a knock ahead of this game, which is one of the factors why he didn’t start the game against Arsenal. We are almost certain that if he had been fully fit, Klopp would have absolutely put him in his starting XI.
