What Andy Robertson was spotted doing to Darwin Nunez after his missed chances vs Chelsea last night

What a strange game Darwin Nunez endured for Liverpool last night.

In many ways, the 24-year-old actually put in a really, really good display. Nunez was his usual relentless self and added another goal contribution with an assist for Luis Diaz.

But the Uruguayan also somehow managed to hit the woodwork four times, including from the penalty spot. No player in Premier League history had ever achieved that feat.

The last of Nunez’s close encounters came just a minute or two before he set Diaz up with a good ball across the box. And as spotted by X user SamuelLFC, Andy Robertson was on hand after the goal to gee Darwin up.

With the camera panning to Nunez after the goal, the Reds No.9 strolled along looking a little anxious. Robertson walked next to him, giving him an encouraging slap on the face.

With Nunez not really reacting, Robertson visibly shouts “Hey!” at his younger teammate, twice. After the second shout, the 29-year-old gave a firm nod of the head as if to say ‘you’ve got this!’ Love that, Robbo.

Robertson recognises Nunez struggles

While Robertson has been missing from the team over the past three months or so, Joe Gomez has done a fine job at left-back.

But this is the kind of thing that we really miss when the Scotland captain isn’t around. On top of being a top player, Robertson is a real leader for Liverpool.

This little moment is a good insight into that.

Nunez is a player who has missed chances before, we all know that. But having hit the post from a penalty and then the bar from a header he really should have scored, it felt like Darwin’s confidence might have just taken a knock.

You could sense that from the way Jurgen Klopp kept him on the pitch, in the hope of grabbing a goal.

And you can see it here on his face after Diaz scored. Having just set up his mate, Nunez should have been buzzing. He usually is when the Reds have bagged a goal. But he didn’t look it.

Robertson obviously recognised that, and used it as a moment to put a metaphorical arm around the striker.

Back in the changing room, we’re sure Klopp would have done one better, and given him a proper hug and a word of support. Nunez will keep on going, he always does. But this was needed from Robbo tonight. Captain stuff.
