Jurgen Klopp’s announcement came out of nowhere on Friday for most fans. It’s still difficult to fathom that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

But it’s not just fans who were stunned by his announcement. Even the players were shocked, as revealed by Andy Robertson. As well as hundreds of former professional players and pundits working in the media.

Klopp has been so synonymous with Liverpool it feels difficult to imagine what the club will be like without him. He took Liverpool from literally the depths to the greatest heights in the club’s recent history.

But his imminent departure has thrown up some strange takes. Including one that has even annoyed Micah Richards.

Micah Richards on Jurgen Klopp announcement

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Richards revealed he has actually been annoyed by the aftermath of Klopp’s announcement. Especially with one rhetoric people keep using.

“You know what, the aftermath is really annoying me!” Richards said.

“People are saying, ‘Oh my god, Klopp’s such a great manager because he only won the league once.’ But, it’s irrelevant. He’s got to three Champions League finals, it’s where he took them from to where they are now, they’re challenging up against one of the best sides ever in the Premier League in Man City.

“What more do you want from him? I think he’s an unbelievable manager. You know normally when you say, what has a manager got? I think he’s got everything.

“I think he’s a great man manager, I think he’s great technically, I think he knows how to get the best out of his team so he’s a motivator as well.

“I wouldn’t say he changed the game in terms of tactics like Pep in creating different positions, but I would say the gegenpress. He made it really valuable for Liverpool and how they want to attack and defend as well. know Trent’s moved from right-back to midfield, so he’s been fluid, he’s got absolutely everything.”

Richards is right. Using the lack of trophies as an argument against Klopp is simply unfair. He’s had to compete against a team with infinite resources, while having finite ones himself. The achievements he has brought to Liverpool in spite of that speaks for themselves.
