Liverpool’s hunt to find Jurgen Klopp’s successor promises to be a pivotal point in the club’s history.
Klopp has been an overwhelming triumph in every single aspect of his tenure. Following him is an almost impossible job. But someone’s got to do it.
So far, the favourite to fill Jurgen’s enormous shoes is former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. Liverpool have even been told that failure to appoint anyone but Alonso will lead to instant dissatisfaction amongst the fanbase.
However, speaking on BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club yesterday, football analyst Statman Dave put forward a different name.
“I’m a big fan of Julian Nagelsmann,” says the expert. “I thought it was a bit unfair the way it ended at Bayern Munich with Robert Lewandowski. You go back and look at some of the numbers there and Bayern were scoring 3.03 goals per game, which is the best record since 2011. I do think his stock is a little bit low but think back to when he went to Bayern and I think they paid 25 million Euros.
“His positional game is very good, like Guardiola’s, he’s pressing game is like Klopp’s pressing game and I think he’s someone who would be perfect for Liverpool, I really do.”
Nagelsmann backed for Liverpool job
This is a fair analysis. Had Klopp announced his decision a year ago, then Nagelsmann would likely have been very much in the frame and very much a popular choice.
But over the past 12 months, the 36-year-old’s reputation has soured. Sacked by Bayern in March, he was then heavily linked with a move to the Premier League with Tottenham and Chelsea. That ultimately didn’t happen.
Instead, Nagelsmann joined the German national team on a short-term contract in September. With that due to end after this summer’s Euros, he’ll be available from July.
On paper, that could put him in there as a genuine candidate for the Liverpool job. It would surely be of interest to the former RB Leipzig coach. He’s been reported to have been keen in the past, and could have the chance to rebuild his reputation as the management game’s next big thing.

Nevertheless, we think the timing might be a little off here. Liverpool will likely need a manager who is available to start immediately once the season ends.
Transfer plans will have to be formulated very quickly indeed, and having someone in as soon as possible will help that. With the Euros set to run into mid July, Nagelsmann will be occupied for just a touch too long.
That doesn’t mean Liverpool won’t consider him, though. Maybe if the Reds see the young manager as the most impressive candidate they’ll happily wait in the short-term for long-term gain.
Some won’t be keen on this idea, but there’d be plenty of reason to be excited about Nagelsmann.
