The January transfer window is now approaching its final stages. It’s around this part of the window that things will start to heat-up.

Clubs will have been working behind the scenes on new transfer deals, and now they will want to wrap those up and accelerate forward. This might be the case with the latest Liverpool target, who is reportedly on the move.

Although it seems Liverpool won’t win the race for his signature. Instead, he will be moving to a rival of sorts in Atletico Madrid. Liverpool will be disappointed to miss out, especially as he is a highly regarded talent in European football.

Liverpool target Arthur Vermeeren

Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for Arthur Vermeeren. Lauded by Total Football Analysis as an ‘excellent’ midfielder, he has been one of the breakout young stars in Europe this year after establishing himself in Antwerp’s title-winning midfield, and impressing in the Champions League.

But according to Fabrizio Romano, it’s Atletico Madrid, who have won the race for his signature with the Spanish club having agreed a deal to sign Vermeeren.

Liverpool will be disappointed to lose out on a really exciting talent in Vermeeren. Although, when it comes to midfielders, Jurgen Klopp’s squad is well-stocked. Especially with young midfielders like Stefan Bajcetic, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai. The Belgian therefore would not have been a priority.

So it makes sense why Liverpool have not tried to actively pursue him. In a few years time maybe that’s something the club may regret. But in all honesty, based on how good the aforementioned players have been and the potential they have – it seems unlikely.
