Arsenal are reportedly advancing to sign Royal Antwerp teenager Arthur Vermeeren, with Liverpool also linked with the midfielder.

According to Sport, the Gunners are pulling away from the competition in the race to sign the 18-year-old wonderkid, with FC Barcelona also interested in Vermeeren.

Lauded by Total Football Analysis as an ‘excellent’ midfielder, Vermeeren has been one of the breakout names in Europe this year after establishing himself in Antwerp’s title-winning midfield.

With the Belgian side in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history, interest has spiked in recent months for Vermeeren, and Liverpool have been in contention for the youngster.

However, this update could now hint at Arsenal beating everyone to Vermeeren’s signature, with Mikel Arteta keen to bring in a young midfielder to his ranks in January.

Indeed, whilst Liverpool are looking for a similar player, losing out on Vermeeren won’t be the end of the world for the Reds, with more suitable options still out there in the market heading into 2024.

Vermeeren has enjoyed an explosive few months for Antwerp, and with the Premier League now calling, the teenager could be set to take his talents to England with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

However, for Liverpool, they shouldn’t be losing sleep over Arsenal potentially signing Vermeeren, with the youngster still very much at the start of his footballing career.

At 18, Vermeeren has much to learn before he is ready to start at the highest level in England, and a move now could be coming too early for the Belgian prospect.
