Rio Ferdinand has never been a popular figure at Liverpool. As a former Manchester United captain that’s bound to happen. Especially, as he was part of one of the most successful Manchester United teams in the club’s history.

But as a pundit, the former Manchester United man, has gotten quite impartial, and even at times amicable towards Liverpool. He doesn’t always get everything 100% right. And some United bias still lingers. As pundits go though, in general, he often makes sense.

His latest comments about one Liverpool forward, who left the club last summer definitely go into that category as well. Ferdinand is once again, absolutely spot on with his assessment.

Rio Ferdinand on Roberto Firmino

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Ferdinand revealed that he would have dreaded playing Roberto Firmino in his playing days.

“Firmino would have been a problem for me. The way he drops in. The way he is asking, are you going to follow me into midfield or are you going to stay there and let me get the ball and turn?” Ferdinand said.

In all honesty, that’s high praise coming from Ferdinand, who let’s be honest was one of the best defenders in the Premier League of his generation. The fact that he has lavished out such strong praise for Firmino is a testament of the Brazilian’s talent.

Firmino was simply sensational for Liverpool during his time at the club. He was a unique one of a kind footballer. And it’s no surprise Jurgen Klopp hasn’t really directly replaced him in the Liverpool team since he left. The Brazilian is simply irreplaceable. Even though Liverpool are doing well without him, he is still sorely missed. From his white pearly smile to his no look finishes.
