With just over a week remaining in the January transfer window, it’s all gone a little cold for Liverpool.
In fairness to the Reds, they’re not the only ones looking to keep their powder dry this New Year. There’s hardly been any noteworthy business across the whole of Europe so far.
That hasn’t stopped the usual transfer links from appearing, though. One of the hottest of which recently has been the news that Liverpool are on the trail of Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.
The Reds are claimed to have been watching Diomande of late, as he establishes himself in Portugal.
But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, there’s nothing ‘concrete’ regarding Liverpool and the 20-year-old just yet. Writing in his Daily Briefing this morning, Romano gave the latest on Diomande’s situation.
“Diomande is a fantastic centre back, he can be an excellent addition for any club. But, despite links with Liverpool, I’m not aware of movement around Diomande now, honestly,” says the transfer expert. “He’s been linked with ten clubs but there is nothing concrete on Sporting’s table so far.”
Romano plays down Diomande links
Of course, it’s hardly surprising that nothing is imminent in regards to Diomande and Liverpool.
With the Reds going so well on all fronts so far this season, a January addition in any area of the pitch had seemed unlikely.
That may be different in the summer though, and if this link in particular is to gain any traction, then that’s when it’ll be.
As a result, it’s still well worth keeping an eye out for Diomande between now and May.
His Ivory Coast side have just been disappointingly dumped out of their own Africa Nations Cup tournament. Consequently, the young centre-back will now return to Lisbon.

The Lions are a hot ticket this season. Top of the league table, Liverpool fans may also want to keep a watch over Diomande’s defensive partner, Goncalo Inacio. Striker Viktor Gyokeres is also worth a look. The Swede who has already been claimed to be better than half of Jurgen Klopp’s current forward line.
But even with all that talent in-front of them, Diomande seems to be the one Liverpool scouts will be watching most closely. Reportedly boasting a £70m release clause in his contract [The Daily Mail], he’s highly priced.
As long as no other side puts in a concrete offer between now and next week, expect to see this link continue to surface over the coming months.
But if you’re hoping for something to progress before February, you’re setting up for disappointment. It isn’t going to happen.
