Liverpool told there’s a £20m player who is better than most of their forwards

Liverpool have been told that a former Coventry City striker would improve them massively.

The Reds currently possess one of the most feared forward lines in all of Europe. With five players who any team would love to get their hands on, Liverpool have some serious firepower.

Nevertheless, there’s always room for improvement. The Reds have been linked with Kylian Mbappe for some time now, and he’s a player who would take them to another level.

But according to Sporting legend Manuel Fernandes, there’s another striker who could come in and do a better job for Liverpool – Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres. Speaking to A Bola about Gyokeres, Fernandes – who had two spells at Sporting in the 1970’s and 80’s – suggested that he could see the 25-year-old playing for Liverpool.

“I sincerely hope he doesn’t leave Sporting, at least before the end of the season,” said the 72-year-old. “I think it’s difficult for any club to beat the [€100 million] clause in this winter market. To leave you have to be to a big club in England.

“For example, Liverpool have players there who don’t have half the quality of Gyokeres. I see him, for example, at the level of a Bayern Munich. But for now, so be it. It’s clear that he feels good at Sporting, he’s a very serious and focused player.”

Liverpool told of Gyokeres quality

This sounds like a big claim from Fernandes. There’s no question that Gyokeres is a good player who’s having a good season, but which Liverpool forward is he better than?

The Swede has been on fire since his £20m move from Coventry in the summer. With 20 goals in 23 games across all competitions, Gyokeres looks like the real deal.

He’s also laid on a further nine assists, proving that he isn’t just a goal-scorer, too.

Those kinds of numbers have led to suggestions that Gyokeres could be on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

He hasn’t yet been linked with Liverpool, though. And despite what Fernandes claims, we don’t think he will be.

The Sporting legend’s bullish statement is all well and good, but we don’t think Gyokeres improves Liverpool at all. Put any of the Reds’ current options into the Portuguese Liga and and watch them post up similar numbers.

Darwin Nunez slammed in 34 goals for Benfica a couple of years ago, while even Luis Diaz – who’s been struggling for goals – had scored 16 by this stage in 2021/22.

Diogo Jota would surely do well back in his homeland, while Cody Gakpo hit 13 goals in his last half-season in the Eredivisie, a league of similar standing. We like Gyokeres and he’s doing well, but this is just nonsense.
