Liverpool are exploring possible opportunities to sign a centre-back in the foreseeable future. It is moot whether Jurgen Klopp’s side will try to pursue potential targets in this window though. The January window has always been a difficult market to operate in.
In the past, when the Reds have conducted business, they were reactive decisions based on developments in the market – rather than proactive moves that they had been planning to make. For example, when Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo last year – it was because Manchester United had started to pursue the Dutchman. Liverpool had already planned to bring him to the club in the summer – so it made sense to sign him before United got their hands on the talented attacker.
This time around expect the same sort of policy from Liverpool. With not long left to go now until the window shuts close – it is looking unlikely that the Reds will make a signing. And the latest news seems to confirm that as well.

Antonio Silva to Liverpool – the latest
Antonio Silva is regarded as one of the best up and coming centre-backs in the league. He has previously been described as a ‘superstar’ and he has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time.
Now his agent, Jorge Mendes, has revealed he is 100% guaranteed to stay at Benfica until the end of the season. And he is not expecting a January move.
“There were proposals for João Neves and Antonio Silva but the door is not open,” Mendes said as per Record. “They will stay at Benfica until the end of the season, it’s 100% guaranteed… then Rui Costa will decide what to do.”
Still only 20-years-old, Silva has a lot of experience under his belt already. He could be a fantastic signing for Liverpool. And someone who could fill that centre-back role for many years to come. The fact that Benfica don’t want to lose him in January makes complete sense. But it would not be a surprise if Liverpool tried to pursue him in the summer.
