Even without a game over the past week or so, Liverpool players have still been in the news of late.
As ever, the focus has been on star man Mohamed Salah. While his Liverpool teammates have been resting up and jetting off on holiday, Salah has been turning out for Egypt at AFCON.
Although he picked up a worrying injury during their latest game last night, the 31-year-old started the tournament in good fashion.
Having been played as a midfielder in a warm-up match, Mo was back to his goal-getting self on Sunday. It wasn’t the best game for Egypt as they drew 2-2 win Mozambique, but Salah still got a goal and an assist.
However, speaking to The Rest Is Football podcast released today, pundit Micah Richards has downplayed the Liverpool man’s impact.
“Do you know what’s mad about that? Everyone goes goal and assist for Salah. The assist he shanked the shot and then his penalty, you have to put it away, but he did shank the assist!” Richards laughed.
Richards downplays Salah involvement
Richards is absolutely right to have a chuckle at Salah’s assist from the other day.
If you simply look at the statistics, you’ll see that Mo registered a goal and also set one up himself against Mozambique. Happy days.
But watching it back, it’s one of the most bizarre assists that the Egyptian King will likely ever register during his career.
With the ball coming in from the left, Salah looks to strike it with his lethal left-foot. However, the Liverpool man gets himself in a muddle, executing what can only be described as an ‘air shot.’
Mo didn’t catch all air though, he also managed to clip the ball just enough with his studs to roll it into the path of striker Mostafa Mohamed.

From there it was all the Nantes forward. All in one movement, Mohamed took a touch, rolled the defender and fired an excellent shot into the corner.
All eyes are inevitably on Salah for Egypt, but this was a tremendously executed goal from the France-based striker.
Mo did of course get his goal, although it wasn’t all that convincing either. His last-gasp penalty bounced in off the inside of the left post.
Salah may not always be the prettiest footballer on the eye, but he’s still one of the most effective. By hook or by crook, he gets those goal contributions in.
