Liverpool are in conversations to sign a new left-back in 2024.
The Reds are currently extremely light on the left side of their defence, with both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas nursing relatively long-term injuries.
In the meantime, Joe Gomez has stepped in valiantly to ensure there’s been no drop-off in results. Meanwhile, young Owen Beck has also been recalled from his promising loan spell at Dundee.
But with Robertson now pushing 30, Liverpool need to start looking to the future at some point. With that in mind, Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri has previously been mentioned as a possible long-term replacement for Robertson.
And now, Football Transfers claim that the Reds are actively making steps towards securing that deal. Liverpool have reportedly already entered into talks with Wolves over the signing of Ait-Nouri.
With the 22-year-old currently away at AFCON with Algeria, a transfer during January is said to be potentially ‘complicated’. However, should Liverpool – or Arsenal who are also claimed to be interested – present a bid in excess of £50m, Ait-Nouri will reportedly be allowed to leave. If not, a summer exit appears to be more likely.
Liverpool enter Ait-Nouri talks
There may be just two weeks now remaining in the transfer window, but Liverpool won’t be panicking.
Of course there’s an argument that the Reds do indeed need a left-back brought in as a matter of urgency, as well as possibly a centre-back.
Gomez is doing a fine job for now but he’s liable to break down too, which would leave Liverpool in real trouble. Beyond the 26-year-old, Beck is completely unproven in the Premier League.
But with Robertson and Tsimikas both nearing a return to the first-team, there also seems little point in adding another £50m player to that mix.

If Jurgen Klopp is indeed planning to bolster his options at left-back, then it would be as a part of a longer-term plan, probably actionable in the summer.
From our point of view though, we can’t necessarily find the logic in signing a player like Ait-Nouri.
Sure, Robertson isn’t getting younger, but he’s also always been remarkably fit. Unless there’s a steep drop-off in the near future from the Scot, he won’t need replacing for a while yet. Tsimikas has also only recently signed a new contract and showed before his injury that he’s an absolutely capable back-up.
We like Ait-Nouri and he’s the kind of player who should be of interest once this does jump to the top of the agenda. For now though, it isn’t a priority. Put a pin in those talks, Reds.
