Former Liverpool player says Andy Robertson ‘slaughtered’ him after what he did to Virgil van Dijk

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has shared a brilliant dressing room story involving two senior Reds players.

Lonergan never made a competitive appearance for Liverpool, serving as third-choice during the title-winning 2019/20 season.

But having spent a successful year at the club, the 40-year-old has been left with plenty of stories. Four years on from his stint at Anfield, Lonergan has been regaling one such tale to the Undr The Cosh podcast.

“Virgil [van Dijk] had this [hair] conditioner, right and like, it went missing,” began the now Everton ‘keeper. “So I think he was kicking off a bit because this conditioner has gone missing. And I’m just like in the corner, just got out the shower and I heard Robbo shout ‘big Lonners has got it, he’s put it on eBay!'”

“Because he was on you wasn’t he for getting stuff signed and that?” asked one of the hosts. “Robbo, yeah, all the time. I never got much signed and here he is, ‘eBay account, Lonners22’, I thought ‘here we go’. I was embarrassed asking and then you sent me a flipping shirt without even asking. You just said ‘shirt here for Virgil to sign’.

“So I’m waiting in the dressing room and he’s not come in. It was near Christmas so I’m thinking ‘I need to get this signed today and get it in the post’. Anyhow, I’m walking around with this shirt under my top. He comes out the physio room, it looked like it was quiet, I couldn’t see all the beds. I’m like, ‘Virg, just sign this for us’, he says ‘yeah, no worries mate.’ As he’s signed it, Robbo’s just seen me. Everyone slaughters me, I’ve just gone red mate! Never again!”

Lonergan embarrassed by Robertson

This is a funny little dressing room story that really captures the essence of Robertson.

Not only is he the designated ‘class clown,’ but the Scotsman really loves to get everyone involved in his japes.

Even Lonergan, who was a completely fringe member of the squad, was made to feel included in Robbo’s fun.

Of course, the back-up goalie was the butt of his joke on this occasion. But by the sounds of things, it was all good natured from Liverpool’s left-back. There was no malice in his running joke with Lonergan, and from the way he tells the story, the veteran recognised that too.

As well as being a look into the Reds’ dressing rom of four years ago though, this also highlights just what Liverpool are missing without Robertson now.

The 29-year-old has been out of action since October. Although things have gone well without Robbo on the pitch, the Scotland captains will have left a big hole off it.

Now into his seventh season at the club, Robertson is part of the furniture under Jurgen Klopp. With plenty of change in the changing room this summer, it’s a real shame that he hasn’t been there to properly bed the new players in over the winter.

As Lonergan’s story suggests, the AXA Training Centre will be a darker place for not having Robbo’s laughter fill it. Get well soon wee man!
