Liverpool will soon sign Andy Lonergan, according to reports. The 35-year-old goalkeeper would arrive on a free transfer.
The Liverpool Echo claim that the deal will finalise soon and he’ll be in the squad for the UEFA Super Cup final.
Lonergan spent pre-season with Liverpool, featuring in friendlies as the Reds were short on goalkeepers. It’s quite an incredible turnaround for the veteran, who last played football for Rochdale in March.
It’s also an incredible turnaround for Liverpool, too.
They went into the Community Shield match against Manchester City with their two goalkeepers for the season – Alisson and Simon Mignolet.
Only here we are, about to face Chelsea in Istanbul, and the two goalkeepers are Adrian and Lonergan. That wasn’t in the plan for the season. Mignolet left for Club Brugge, forcing Liverpool to sign Adrian, while Alisson’s injury led to Lonergan.
It does make you wonder about the summer’s transfer business. Liverpool decided to stick with what they had and not sign ‘elite’ backup for the stars.
But then, immediately, they got a reminder of how things can go with a bit of bad luck.
Alisson is out – we don’t know exactly how long for just yet – and there isn’t anything ideal behind him. What happens if other key players suffer similarly? Do Liverpool have players who can step up and keep things ticking over?
That, we may or may not find out later in the season but if they don’t, it will be far more difficult to fix.
For now, we’ll just hope that Liverpool have fixed their goalkeeping problem.
