Liverpool have half-a-foot in the Carabao Cup final after beating Fulham 2-1 on Wednesday.
The performance wasn’t the most convincing from Liverpool and they were reliant on their substitutes to turn things around. However, goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo mean they take a lead to Craven Cottage a week on Wednesday.
Fulham are good side though, and the Reds will know that the job is far from being finished.
With that in mind, Alan Shearer has given his prediction for the second-leg, which takes place on the 24th of this month. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said he was expecting another tight affair.
“They [Liverpool] got the two goals and it could and probably should have been more in the end,” said the pundit. “But I think that one is wide open as well.
“If you said to Fulham 2-1 before the game, I don’t think that is a bad result for them because I think they would perhaps fancy their chances. But with Liverpool’s forward line and what they can bring in, you always have to fancy them.”
Shearer tips Liverpool… just
It would be a real surprise if Liverpool had things all their own way at Craven Cottage in two weeks.
The Reds know from their past couple of experiences at the stadium that it isn’t the easiest place to go. And judging from Fulham’s two visits to Anfield this season, they’ll have to ride out some rough patches.
Nevertheless, Liverpool haven’t lost away to the Cottagers since December 2011. If they manage the same again, they’ll be heading to Wembley.
Recent history tells us that it’ll certainly be tight, though. The last seven games between the two teams have either been drawn or settled by the odd goal.

Liverpool drew 2-2 at the Cottage last season and had to settle for a 1-1 on their previous visit in 2020.
With Marco Silva’s team roared on by a loud home support, they’ll know that they have a sniff of reaching a first ever Carabao Cup final.
Being the team in the lead though, Liverpool won’t panic. They’ll head into this one as big favourites despite Fulham’s relatively good recent record against them.
In the end, we’re with Shearer. It would be a surprise if the Reds were to throw their lead away. A third goal really would have been nice on Wednesday though, and that might yet come back to haunt Liverpool.
