Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer predict how Liverpool fans would react to Everton getting relegated

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have given their thoughts on Liverpool supporters’ views about Everton’s current struggles.

The Toffees have actually been very good at times under Sean Dyche this season. However, having been hit with a 10-point deduction and now losing three on the spin, they’re in danger of the drop.

And speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker suggested that Liverpool fans may find some glee in the situation – but quickly changed his mind.

“We don’t want to see that new stadium in the Championship, although Liverpool fans might,” said the Match of the Day presenter. “Actually, I don’t think they would. I think they would miss that Merseyside derby.”

“I don’t think they would [want Everton to go down],” Shearer agreed.

Liverpool rooting for Everton… kind of

The answer to this question will be different depending on who you ask. Some Liverpool supporters do indeed take a huge amount of satisfaction in seeing their neighbours struggle. Others see it the opposite way.

For fans not from the city or the country, they may not even have an opinion at all.

Liverpool are a global club after all and have support in just about every country on the planet. Those fans are more likely to see Manchester United or even Manchester City as a bigger rival.

It’s been decades since Everton truly challenged Liverpool and the fact is that the club itself reportedly view their Blue neighbours as no threat at all. That lack of competition breeds a certain apathy.

But for us, we think the prevailing attitude is exactly as Lineker and Shearer claim that it is.

Although just about everyone of a Liverpool persuasion will find some humour in the constant ne’er do well stories at Goodison Park, they won’t want to see them go down.

If you have a look on social media, it may not feel that way. But as ever, online views do not generally depict real life.

Plenty of Liverpool fans also have Everton supporters as close friends or family. A little bit of teasing here and there is expected. But beyond that, there’s no real animosity.

Flip this the other way around though, and it may not be quite as placid. For the Reds, it’s easy to see the Blues as an irrelevance when you’re flying high and winning trophies. But on the other side of that coin there’s a club who are sick and tired of being second-best. It’s an interesting dynamic, but from our side, we’d say that Lineker and Shearer are bang on.
