What Alisson Becker was spotted doing after seeing Loris Karius on the Anfield pitch last night

Alisson Becker ran into his predecessor at Liverpool last night as Newcastle United came to Anfield.

When Alisson replaced Loris Karius in the Liverpool goal in 2018, it turned out to be one of the biggest upgrades in the club’s history.

Karius wasn’t a bad goalkeeper, but his disastrous turn in the 2018 Champions League final has left a permanent stain on his career.

Having been displaced by Alisson, the German went on to spend two years on-loan at Besiktas. Returning to Anfield, he then had a brief stint at Union Berlin, before spending the 2021/22 season training alongside Alisson back at Liverpool.

So, the two players are well-acquainted despite their history. And that was in evidence last night with X account This Is Anfield posting a video of Karius – now Newcastle’s back-up goalie – chatting with Alisson on the centre-circle at full-time.

The pair stroll casually together in conversation for around 20 seconds, with Diogo Jota briefly interrupting to hug Karius. A hand-clap and a hug ends the interaction. Ghosts of goalkeepers past and present.

Despite Liverpool having won everything since that dreadful night in Kyiv in 2018, some supporters still hold ill-will towards Karius. But that could never be us.

The 30-year-old has had a rough, rough time of things over the past few years.

Since joining Newcastle in 2022, his only appearance for the club remains last year’s Carabao Cup final. Even then, he only played because of suspension for Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka’s ineligibility.

So, it isn’t a stretch to say that the Champions League final against Real Madrid ruined Loris’ career.

Liverpool have moved on. Having seen Karius blunder on the biggest stage, they went out and got the best goalkeeper in the world. In the years since, they’ve won it all.

Their former goalkeeper meanwhile has barely recovered at all. He doesn’t deserve anything but support from anyone associated with Liverpool.

Thankfully, Alisson’s little interaction here shows that this is the feeling that prevails among those who have played with Karius. The Brazilian is a top goalkeeper and an even better person.

Nice to see Loris back at Anfield too, hopefully the place still holds some more fond memories for him.
