Cody Gakpo has lifted the lid on which of his Liverpool teammates is first to training every day.

Today marks a year since Liverpool announced the signing of Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. In that time, the 24-year-old has settled in well with his teammates.

Having initially learned from Roberto Firmino, Gakpo still has the legendary Mohamed Salah to to turn to for advice. And in quotes from the Liverpool ECHO today, the Dutchman says that’s exactly what he does. Meanwhile, it won’t be a surprise to learn that Mo is the man to beat into training in the morning.

“I have learned a lot from Mo already,” says Gakpo. “He is a real professional. He is always the first in the gym and the last out. Maybe that sounds a little bit cliched but it’s true. Even if you get in really early, Mo is always there first!

“You see how he moves and how he does things on the pitch but also outside of the pitch and what he eats too.

“I think Mo is also a person who is trying to also help the younger players to develop and I appreciate that a lot form him. I have spoken to him a lot of times about smart things he does, how it has helped him and maybe how it can help me as well to become a better player.”

Salah setting the standards

There were plenty of stories from their time at Liverpool together that it was always a battle between Sadio Mane and Salah for who was in the gym first.

In their relentless drive for perfection, both Mane and Salah would push themselves to the limit.

With Sadio having since departed, it would be interesting to hear if anyone from today’s squad has filled that role. If not, then expect Mo to dominate this for some time to come.

The Egyptian is in supreme physical shape. Rarely, if ever injured, the 31-year-old looks after himself better than anyone in the Reds team.

As Gakpo looks to embark on a top Liverpool career of his own, he’d be wise to listen to anything Salah says to him.

It isn’t easy to do what Mo has done, but it is possible to at least copy his techniques and attempt to do it for yourself.

Whenever these discussions come around about Liverpool, Salah is the man who’s always taking the crown. It would be nice to see some of the younger players step up and challenge him for that.

In the meantime though we just have to take our hat off to Mo. He’s as dedicated a professional as it’s possible to be. One of the many reasons why he’s simply one of the greatest Liverpool players of all time.
