Liverpool could be set to do business with Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney in January.

Rooney is currently manager of Championship side Birmingham City. With the Blues currently sitting 17th in the table, the Scouser is under real pressure.

And consequently, according to TeamTALK, Rooney will look to the winter window to bolster his squad.

They claim that the 38-year-old has his eyes on a number of his former Derby County players, including Liverpool’s Kaide Gordon.

The Reds signed Gordon from Derby as a 16-year-old back in 2021. Now 19, he’s in need of game time following a lengthy injury.

With that in mind, it’s claimed that Liverpool would be ‘ready to consider’ allowing Gordon to leave on-loan. Birmingham reportedly aren’t the only ones interested though, Middlesbrough and high-flying Ipswich are also said to be ‘keen’ on the youngster.

Rooney hoping for Gordon reunion

There is the possibility that a reunion for Gordon with Rooney could be a good option for Liverpool.

The England legend gave Kaide his first-team debut at Derby as a 16-year-old. Rooney obviously thinks a lot of him.

Having endured a confidence-sapping two years out with injury, linking up with his old boss could be just what Gordon needs.

Regular game time in the second division was a godsend for Harvey Elliott at a similar stage of his career. It could give Gordon a similar boost.

Nevertheless, Liverpool should think very carefully about this. It can be difficult for a young player to get into a struggling team and could end up doing him more harm than good.

Only just back from such a long time out, there’s also the chance that Gordon isn’t quite ready for the physical demands of the Championship.

Another thing for the Reds to consider is that they may well need the 19-year-old in the first-team soon. Mohamed Salah is heading to AFCON in the New Year, while Ben Doak’s season could be over following a nasty-sounding injury. Liverpool shouldn’t leave themselves light.

If things had progressed normally for Gordon over the past two years, he may have already been in a position to step into that void seamlessly. He’s been seen as an ‘exceptional’ talent’ [Daily Mail]. Now, either by loan or in the first-team, it’s time to get back to playing.
