Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have a 20-year-old youngster who can go right to the top

Jamie Carragher has backed Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah to make it right to the top.

Quansah has been a breakout star for Liverpool this season. With Jurgen Klopp even admitting to being surprised by the 20-year-old’s development, he looks set for a big future.

That hasn’t stopped some casting doubts over Quansah’s suitability, though. The internet is full of doubting Thomas’s whatever the player. Just last night, X account ‘Whatta Hit’ claimed that Jarell has a ‘sub-elite physical profile’ which will limit him from being a top quality centre-back.

Quite why Carragher took exception to this post, we’re not quite sure. But we’re pleased that he did. Hitting back on X, the Reds legend backed Quansah all the way.

“Twitter is full of this stuff, people passing on their opinions on players like they are Rinus Michels!!!!!” wrote the 45-year-old. “He’s 20 FFS & he’s got everything you’d want to be a top CB. Thank god this app wasn’t about when I was coming through.”

This will be a brilliant confidence booster for Quansah if he is to see it. Carragher didn’t have to reply to a relatively small X account, but he did.

As a legendary centre-back at the club, it will surely mean a lot for Jarell to see he has the backing of Carra.

And why shouldn’t he? Despite what the pseudo-intellectual stuff online might say, Quansah has shown that he really can be a proper option for Liverpool.

His latest performance – in the Carabao Cup against West Ham – displayed the absolute best of him yet again.

The game did also highlight that Quansah is a young player making his first steps in senior football. Perhaps a more experienced defender wouldn’t have allowed Jarrod Bowen to cut in-field to score, for example.

But by and large Jarell looks ready to slot in whenever needed. More than just ‘not letting anyone down,’ as you’d say was the case for Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams when stepping into the first-team, Quansah has shone.

With Joel Matip injured, the England U21 international looks set to get plenty more game time as the season progresses. Expect him to go from strength to strength.

It may be true that ultimately Quansah has to move for more game time, or any number of reasons. But for the time being, let’s get excited, because this young man looks the real deal. Carragher sees that, and he knows more than me or you about playing centre-back for Liverpool!
