Jorg Schmadtke reportedly plans to step away from Liverpool at the end of this season just one year after joining the club as sporting director.

The German transfer guru was recruited by the Reds earlier this year heading into the summer transfer window, with Schmadtke influencing Liverpool’s incomings by targeting the Bundesliga market.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch were all signed by the Anfield side as Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was completely overhauled with a wide range of new additions.

However, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Schmadtke plans to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, with the sporting director only expected to have a short spell at the club to begin with.

As per the journalist, Schmadtke will be involved with Liverpool’s decision-making in the upcoming January transfer window, where a defender and midfielder are needed for the Reds.

Yet with Schmadtke now expected to depart in 2024, Liverpool’s search for a sporting director will begin again, a process that could take months to conclude.

Schmadtke was only ever going to be a quick-fix solution for Liverpool heading into the summer transfer window earlier this year.

And now, as we approach 2024, the Reds must be looking to sign a long-term replacement for Schmadtke, who has proven to be a good sporting director for the Anfield side.

Shrewd signings such as Endo and long-term projects such as Gravenberch have been aspiring moves for Liverpool, with Szoboszlai potentially one of the deals of the summer.

Yet for Liverpool, the work has to begin now to sign a replacement for Schmadtke, with the Reds aware that they can’t afford to procrastinate with such a role.
