Liverpool are admirers of Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, who looks set to be on the move in 2024.

The Reds have been heavily linked with Hincapie since the summer. Latest reports from this week suggest that the 21-year-old will push to leave Leverkusen in the January transfer window.

And touching on those rumours for The Daily Briefing today, journalist Neil Jones reports that Liverpool are ‘definitely’ fans of Hincapie.

“There is no doubt that Liverpool need to be looking at a new centre-back, if not now then certainly in the summer, and there is definitely an admiration for Piero Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen,” Jones says.

“At 21, and with the capability of playing both as a central defender and as a left-back, the Ecuador international is someone who is likely to make a move in 2024. Though given the position Leverkusen find themselves in, both in the Bundesliga and the Europa League, I think we can safely rule out a January move.

“Jurgen Klopp hinted recently that Liverpool may find it hard to get the player they really want in January, but they are certainly looking. And a young, mobile, ball playing centre-back is high on their agenda. It may be even higher if another defensive injury arrives before January 1.”

Liverpool looking at Hincapie

It’s great to hear that Liverpool are actively looking to recruit during the winter window.

They have a real shot at winning the Premier League this year, but with injuries mounting up, their assault could be scuppered.

Luckily, the chance to add to the squad is just around the corner. And a centre-back looks to rightfully be at the top of Klopp’s wish list.

Nevertheless, as Jones points out, doing business in January can be a challenge. Liverpool do have a good record of mid-season purchases though, so they shouldn’t be too perturbed.

In terms of Hincapie specifically, the Ecuadorian looks like an exciting prospect. However, with Leverkusen flying on all fronts, the Reds will perhaps have to wait until the summer to make their move.

If they do approach though, it seems that the player would be open to it. Back in the summer there were reports that Hincapie was dreaming of a potential move to Anfield.

His agent, Manuel Sierra, has also spoken publicly about the chances of his client changing clubs. Sierra told Ecuadorian site Bola VIP that a transfer fee in the region of £43m could even be enough to get Hincapie.

At that kind of price, there is a possibility that Liverpool see him as being good value. Either way, we don’t think this will be the last we’ve heard of this over the next few weeks.
