Liverpool aren’t sure that reported transfer target Lloyd Kelly is really good enough for them.
Kelly has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield ahead of the January transfer window. With his contract set to finish at the end of the season, the 25-year-old could be on the market in the New Year.
As Liverpool search for a potential replacement for the injured Joel Matip, Kelly’s name has come up.
However, according to The Daily Mail, the Reds are now having doubts over whether the Bournemouth player is ‘of the standard required.’ They’re unlikely to try and sign him.
Other names are also assessed, with a rumoured move for Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix also said to be ‘not a priority.’ Meanwhile, injury has reportedly crossed Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs off Liverpool’s list, too.
As a result, it’s claimed that the Reds have no ‘concrete key target’ in defence for January. Nevertheless, Jurgen Klopp will reportedly ‘keep his eyes peeled’ for cheap or short-term deals that might crop up.
Liverpool say no to Kelly
Back when Liverpool were first linked with Kelly – in 2019 – he seemed like a decent young target to go for.
With the potential to develop further and for a reasonable price-tag, there’s every chance the former Bristol City man would have been a fine signing.
But almost five years on, and Kelly hasn’t really developed in the manner Liverpool might have expected.
He still hasn’t even really nailed down a place in Andoni Iraloa’s Cherries side this season. With all due respect, that’s not a good sign for his prospects at Anfield.

So, we’d say that this one is fairly cut and dry. Unless Liverpool are seeing something that other simply aren’t, there’s no reason to go for Kelly.
Of course, we – and the Reds – could be made to regret not picking the Englishman up for a bargain.
With links to the likes of AC Milan of late, Kelly looks sure to get his move over the next six months. Still relatively young, he could go on to be a star yet.
For the time being though, we see no reason to grumble with Liverpool’s decision here. Time to finally rule this one out.
