Kalvin Phillips was reportedly open to joining Liverpool in the summer as the Manchester City midfielder prepares to leave the Etihad Stadium next month.

The 28-year-old England international was linked with a move to Anfield during the summer as Liverpool eyed Phillips as a potential replacement for Fabinho.

Whilst Liverpool ended up signing Wataru Endo from VfB Stuttgart, it’s clear that Phillips is still a target for the Reds, with reports suggesting that the Merseyside giants are keen on a move for the midfielder.

And according to the Daily Mail, Phillips was willing to make the move to Liverpool in the summer, even with the Reds now big rivals with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Indeed, Phillips could have been a sensational addition for Liverpool, with the former Leeds United star a player who could have thrived under Jurgen Klopp.

And heading into January, there is a small chance that Phillips can now complete his move to Anfield if Liverpool make a renewed attempt to sign the midfielder next month.

Signed for £45m last year, it’s safe to say that Phillips’ move to City has been a total disaster, with the midfielder hardly featuring for the club despite winning a treble last season.

And for Liverpool, taking a punt on Phillips could be an appealing proposition, especially if the England international was already open to making the move to Anfield in the summer.

Whilst City might resent the idea of selling a top player to a direct Premier League rival, Phillips pushing the move could weaken the Cityzen’s grip on where the midfielder ends up.

And if Liverpool are still interested, the move could be perfect for all parties, with Phillips still good enough to star for a top Premier League side.
