Manchester City are reportedly ready to challenge for the signing of Joao Palhinha in January, who is also wanted by Liverpool.

The Fulham midfielder is once again in the rumour mill with the Portuguese international being linked with a move to Anfield next month, as well as Manchester United.

Lauded by Danny Murphy as ‘absolutely phenomenal’, Palhinha has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League yet again after a breakout year last term with the Cottagers.

And now, according to the Daily Star, City are looking to bring in the 28-year-old in the January transfer window, with Pep Guardiola’s side ready to challenge the likes of Liverpool for the midfielder.

Indeed, given how much the Reds need a defensive midfielder, Palhinha could be a dream short-term signing for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp continues to rebuild his squad.

However, interest from City could be a massive problem for Liverpool, with Palhinha likely to favour a move to their reigning European and English champions than Anfield.

The January transfer window is lining up to be a crazy one with the likes of Liverpool, United and now City all looking to spend big on Palhinha.

And for Liverpool, they can’t allow the Etihad Stadium side to win the race for Palhinha, with a potential signing putting City back in front for the Premier League title.

Whilst the Reds could struggle with the finances, there could be just enough left to get a deal done with Fulham before City can pull the trigger for Palhinha.

And if Liverpool can secure the midfielder’s signature, there’s every chance that Klopp’s side can go all the way for the English title once again.
