Alan Shearer and Micah Richards are both in agreement about Liverpool’s Europa League chances.

The Reds are the current favourites to lift the trophy in Dublin in 2024, even despite a loss against Union Saint-Gilloise yesterday.

And speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast this morning, both Shearer and Richards say they can’t see anyone stopping Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“Yeah, Liverpool look strong with the squad they have, with the experience they have,” Shearer claimed. “They will without doubt be one of the favourites and fancy themselves to go and win it Liverpool.”

Richards also agreed, claiming that the Reds will be the team to beat.

“I think it is Liverpool’s competition now, with the quality they are showing,” said the former Manchester City defender. “You have the January ahead as well. I would agree with Alan, I think it is down for Liverpool.”

Liverpool backed for Europa success

Looking at the teams that have gone through in the Europa League – and come down from the Champions League – it is hard not to see a path to Liverpool’s success.

Of course, you never know in European competition and the Reds won’t be complacent. But with all the experience they have of reaching and winning finals, you have to back them here.

There are a few tricky customers in there, though. Roma under Jose Mourinho have made it to back-to-back European finals and should be treated with caution.

The likes of Galatasaray and Shakhtar Donetsk are also potentially sticky away days for Liverpool should they make it through the last-32 play-off.

But perhaps the greatest challenger of all to the Reds’ potential crown will be Bayer Leverkusen.

Xabi Alonso’s side are on fire this season. As we approach the half-way mark of the season, Leverkusen are still unbeaten in all competitions in 2023/24.

Boasting an extraordinary amount of fire power, the Germans will feel they can get the better of anyone. Having also topped their group, Liverpool can’t meet Alonso and co until the quarter-final at the earliest. That could be some occasion.

For now though, Liverpool will rightly remains favourites. They have barely got out of second-gear in the groups, but now the real stuff starts. Once they resume action in March, we’ll get an idea of just how serious they are about winning this thing.
