‘Not too interested’… 19-year-old midfielder reacts after rumours Liverpool want to sign him

As the January transfer window approaches, Liverpool continue to be linked with player after player.

One of those to have been suggested as a possible target for the Reds is Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton. The 19-year-old is reportedly seen as one of the most promising young talents in the Championship.

But despite rumours that he could soon leave Rovers, Wharton has put pen to paper on a new contract at Ewood Park. Asked about the possibility of a release clause hiding within that contract, the midfielder told the Lancashire Telegraph that he didn’t know, and ultimately didn’t really care.

“Not that I am aware of,” said the youngster. “I am not a lawyer, I haven’t seen the ins and outs of the contract but I don’t think so [that there’s a release clause in his contract].” Asked about reported interest in him from top division sides, Wharton also claimed that he simply wasn’t interested in the whirring of the rumour mill.

“I think it’s something that comes part and parcel with being a footballer,” he said. “Loads of players have to deal with that. I don’t tend to read much into that, a lot of the stuff you see online, you don’t even know if it’s true.

“Most of the time, I find out on Twitter myself like everyone else. I am not too interested in it. I get on with my game, I am a Blackburn Rovers player and that’s what I am concentrated on. Speculation will come and go, whatever happens, happens. It won’t affect my game.”

Wharton dismisses exit rumours

If you’re a Blackburn supporter, then this should come across really well from Wharton. He’s obviously still a really young player, but the professionalism he shows is actually really impressive.

Plenty of players would have their head turned by interest from the likes of Liverpool. But even if that is the case for this young man, he certainly isn’t showing it.

Continuing his interview with the Lancashire Telegraph, Wharton suggested that his level-headed approach is very much aided by his agent, Gregg Broughton.

“It’s really important [having a good agent], you see a lot of time where players make the wrong decisions or they are misguided,” he says. “He’s done a great job, he is constantly speaking with me and there is a plan there to improve and develop.

“At the end of the day, I know how football works, I am not stupid. I know what is right and what’s wrong, I won’t make any stupid decisions to jeopardise my career.”

It would be interesting to hear whether Wharton would regard a move to Liverpool as one of those ‘stupid decisions.’ The Reds have shown over recent years that if they bring in talented young players from the outside, then they’ll use them. So you like to think not.

But the fact remains that if he were to move to Anfield, Wharton would have a truck-load of top players to get past to get into the team.

By the sounds of things, the England U20 star is happy to take things slow and develop further at Blackburn. A regular in the starting XI already, that sounds like a plan. He’s certainly one to keep an eye on, though.
