Liverpool keeping an eye on 19-year-old Blackburn Rovers defender

Liverpool have set their sights on a young talent currently playing in the Championship.

The Reds haven’t often picked up players from the second division of English football, but have made an exception for prospects like Kaide Gordon and Fabio Carvalho.

They’ve also seen players go out on loan in the Championship. Blackburn Rovers has been one of Liverpool’s favoured spots to send youngsters, with both Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton doing well at Ewood Park.

And now, according to 90min, the Reds are keeping tabs on one of Blackburn’s very own academy products – centre-back Adam Wharton.

They claim that although Tottenham Hotspur are currently seen as the most likely to sign Wharton, Liverpool head a host of other, ‘long-term’ admirers of the 19-year-old.

Having broken through last season, the left-footed teenager is now said to be ‘widely seen’ as one of the Championship’s best young players.

Although 90min claim that Spurs will look to make their reportedly good relationship with Blackburn work to their advantage with Wharton, Liverpool could do the same.

It’s obvious that the Reds have a very good rapport with the Lancashire club, who they’ve trusted with some of their top young prospects.

As well as Elliott and Morton, Liverpool also sent Leighton Clarkson to Blackburn back in 2021.

Clarkson wasn’t nearly as successful as the two players who sandwiched his spell, but the willingness to do business with Blackburn was clear and has continued.

Now, that mutually beneficial partnership could prove to be, well, mutually beneficial yet again.

The Reds have been reported to be in the market for a left-footed centre-back for a little while. Were they to bring in someone like Wharton it wouldn’t be the fans’ first-choice. Someone like Goncalo Inacio may be preferred. But the England U19 star is clearly gifted, home-grown and already Championship hardened.

From Blackburn’s point of view, if they have the pick of clubs to send Wharton to, then why not Liverpool?

A snub could harm their chances of landing another Elliott or Morton in the future. Handing the Reds the reigns could be the right answer for everyone.
