Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has admitted that he views Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold as a real attacking threat.
The England international was a star for the Reds this weekend as the 25-year-old scored a late winner against Fulham to secure all three points for Liverpool at Anfield.
Having rescued a point for Jurgen Klopp’s side a week earlier at Manchester City, Alexander-Arnold has really made an effort in the attack in recent games for Liverpool, and Burn has now said the defender is a threat.
The Newcastle star said on The Monday Night Club when asked about Alexander-Arnold’s unique role as a hybrid fullback for both club and country: “I think as playing that hybrid role he’s perfect.
“You see how good he is on the ball, and I know people have said he’s possibly not as good defensively. Obviously, he’s amazing going forward so he can’t be amazing defensively as that.
“But to have that hybrid role, is Klopp happier doing that than having him as an all-out midfielder? It means you’ve got to go out and bring in a full right-back in and you’re saying ‘Trent, you just are a central midfielder.'”
Trent Alexander-Arnold will one day thrive in Liverpool’s midfield
Given how centrally Alexander-Arnold’s two outfield goals for Liverpool have been in recent games, there are already early signs to suggest that the fullback will one day thrive in the Reds midfield.
The experiment to fully play the 25-year-old has worked wonders for England heading into Euro 2024, with Alexander-Arnold a genuine contender to play in the midfield for Gareth Southgate’s side.
And for Liverpool, it might not be long before Alexander-Arnold is also shifted centrally, especially based on how well the defender has been in cutting in and creating chances for himself in the attack.
Indeed, Alexander-Arnold is a unique talent and one that Liverpool need to use wisely, with the right-back clearly destined to one day play in central midfield for the Reds.
