Chris Sutton admits he’s totally changed his mind about 25-year-old Liverpool player

Chris Sutton has admitted that he’s totally changed his mind on Trent Alexander-Arnold eventually playing in midfield for both Liverpool and England.

The 25-year-old defender has been tried out in the position for the Three Lions in recent international fixtures, with Jurgen Klopp also using Alexander-Arnold in a hybrid role for Liverpool this year.

Yet one pundit who wasn’t sold on the idea was Sutton, yet speaking on The Monday Night Club, the BBC expert has seemingly changed his mind on Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield.

Sutton said when asked what he now thinks about Alexander-Arnold: “It’s a hard one because of how well he’s playing in this hybrid midfield role that he has such a great range of passing.

“But do I think if he stays right-back he will keep getting exposed? Yes, I do, so I suspect if I was a betting man I would say he would end up in there.

“I wouldn’t have said that a year ago, he didn’t have a great game there and I thought ‘well that’s going to be the end of that experiment,’ but he’s got such a range of passing, but he does have weaknesses defensively.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold will excel in midfield in the future

Alexander-Arnold one day fully transitioning into the midfield seems to be a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ at this stage of the Liverpool star’s career.

And with the likes of Sutton now sold on the idea of the defender now one day becoming a midfielder, it seems like many of Alexander-Arnold’s critics are being turned on the matter.

Indeed, whilst it might still be some years before Liverpool make the decision to shift Alexander-Arnold centrally, England seem to be ahead of the curve already with this plan.

And in next summer’s Euros, there’s every chance that Alexander-Arnold will start in the midfield for the Three Lions, a prospect that will excite many supporters in Germany.
