What Fabrizio Romano has now said about Barcelona signing £25m Liverpool player

Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on FC Barcelona’s reported interest in signing Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara in January.

The Liverpool midfielder has once again been linked with a return to Catalonia, with reports suggesting that Thiago could be signed by Barcelona as short-term cover for the injured Gavi.

With the 32-year-old player’s contract due to expire at Liverpool next summer, it would make a lot of sense as to why Barcelona are interested in bringing Thiago back to his boyhood club.

However, according to Romano, signing a midfielder, let alone Thiago, is Barcelona’s priority in January, with the registration of incoming arrival Vitor Roque taking on more importance.

Romano said: “No, no changes so far. Thiago said no to Saudi clubs in July as he wanted to stay at Liverpool but then no changes on the situation.

“I’m not aware of concrete talks with Barca so far, as I said Barca priority is to register Vitor Roque before deciding on the midfielder situation.”

Barcelona could still move to sign Thiago Alcantara from Liverpool

With Thiago clearly set to leave Liverpool next year, there’s every chance that the midfielder could push forward his departure from Anfield to January.

And whilst Barcelona have their priority for the window already set in registering Roque, signing Thiago could emerge as an option for Xavi Hernandez’s side as January progresses.

Indeed, Barcelona clearly need to sign a midfielder with Gavi out until the summer, and Thiago could be a cheap, low-risk option if the 32-year-old is fit enough to feature at the start of 2024.

As a result, Thiago to Barcelona feels very much on the cards, and the Catalan giants could spring into action to bring the Liverpool man back home when January actually rolls around.
