Nico Williams has addressed his future at Athletic Club amid ongoing rumours that Liverpool are interested in signing the striker.

The La Liga prospect is regarded as one of the most exciting attacking talents in European football, with Liverpool one of the clubs reportedly interested in signing Williams.

However, speaking to the press via Fabrizio Romano, the youngster has seemingly hinted that he will soon sign a new contract with Athletic, with Williams’ current deal due to expire next year.

Valued at £43m, there was every chance that the forward could have left Bilbao for nothing at the end of this season, especially with the likes of Liverpool interested in signing Williams.

However, it now looks likely that the forward will pen a new contract with Athletic, though this could be so the La Liga side actually receives a transfer fee for Williams.

Williams said when asked about if he will leave the Basque giants in 2024: “I’m happy here in Bilbao. Athletic fans can be relaxed, no worries.”

Whilst Williams signing a new deal with Athletic could mean the end of Liverpool’s interest in the forward, the way contracts work in La Liga could hint at a different story.

Every player in the Spanish top-flight has a specified release clause, and the value of such an option could determine if Williams leaves Bilbao or not next year.

If the forward was to pen a new deal worth around £50m, then Liverpool could feel inspired to move for Williams, who might want a Premier League move.

Indeed, the future of the Spanish international will be an interesting one to follow, and Williams signing a new contract could still leave the door open for Liverpool to move for the attacker.
