Jurgen Klopp spotted a familiar face before Liverpool’s game against Manchester City today.
Since leaving Liverpool in 2019, Daniel Sturridge has had a poor time of things. Now officially retired, the former Reds striker has taken up a punditry role with Sky Sports.
And having also represented City earlier in his career, Sturridge was a natural choice for Sky’s coverage of the match at the Etihad Stadium today.
As seen in a video from Liverpool’s official X account before kick-off, this led to a happy reunion with Klopp.
Approaching one of his Champions League winners from 2019, Jurgen extends his arms with a big grin on his face. A big old hug then ensues, with both men clearly happy to see one another.
A laugh and a joke then ensue, as old acquaintances are renewed. Lovely to see.
Klopp enjoys Sturridge reuinion
Having seen Liverpool have success largely without him, Sturridge has been somewhat forgotten at times.
But it should be remembered that the 34-year-old was a big, big player for the Reds once upon a time. After forming a formidable partnership with Luis Suarez, he was the main striker at the club at the time Klopp arrived.
Unfortunately, injuries then ended up limiting his role as the years went on. But his talent as a natural finisher was always still evident.
Even after the arrival and subsequent brilliance of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, as well as Roberto Firmino’s emergence, Sturridge stuck about.

Klopp was obviously a fan of the No.15’s and despite his slightly reduced ball, wanted him around.
Given how well Sturridge spoke about the form of Darwin Nunez recently, perhaps that good relationship could still bear some fruit for Liverpool.
You can imagine that if he were invited, Sturridge would be delighted to come to the AXA Training Centre. With Darwin still a little wasteful in-front of goal, and Daniel a real master of that particular art, it could be really useful.
Have a word Jurgen, get him involved.
