Liverpool face Manchester City this weekend with Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to start, yet Gareth Southgate’s England decisions have left fans confused.

The 25-year-old started both games this international break for the Three Lions, with the England manager even praising Alexander-Arnold after his midfield performance against North Macedonia.

With Joe Cole also tipping the Liverpool defender to now start for England at next year’s Euros, it seems odd that there would be a problem in Alexander-Arnold starting back-to-back games for his country.

However, with Liverpool taking on their biggest opponent yet this season on Saturday, there’s good reason why supporters aren’t best pleased with Alexander-Arnold getting a good run out for England.

The theme of this international break has easily been injuries, with Spain and FC Barcelona star Gavi tearing his ACL whilst numerous superstar names have had to drop out of international football due to fitness issues.

Whilst Alexander-Arnold has seemingly survived the injury plague that is currently sweeping football, the defender starting two games in what was essentially two friendlies for England is far from ideal.

And for Liverpool fans, this is where the crux of the issue is, with Alexander-Arnold putting more minutes into his legs when really the defender could have been rested ahead of Saturday’s clash with City.

With Ibrahima Konate pulling out of international duty with France due to injury, Jurgen Klopp will now be praying there are no more problems that will add to his ongoing absentee list.

Every Premier League club is now seemingly going through their own crisis, with City alone having a reported eight players out through injury heading into Saturday.

Indeed, whilst Alexander-Arnold escaped England duty unscathed, Southgate’s decision to play the Liverpool star was risky, to say the least, and things could have got messy had the defender actually got injured.
