24-year-old Liverpool player says he’s now feeling completely at home at the club

Liverpool have seen their squad reshaped drastically by Jurgen Klopp over the past 12 months.

Out have gone stalwarts like Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson and James Milner, with younger, fresher replacements rocking up to take their places.

The first player to kick-off that rebuilding process of the past year was forward Cody Gakpo. Having arrived from PSV Eindhoven in January, Gakpo has bedded in quickly at Anfield, scoring 11 times in 40 appearances so far.

With his one-year Liverpool anniversary fast approaching, the 24-year-old looked back on his time with the Reds this week with Dutch outlet AD.

“It was an exciting year in which I made a beautiful journey,” Gakpo asserted. “And still. I feel very much at home in Liverpool.

“Football is going well, we live nice. My girlfriend is happy and my family and friends are also experiencing everything. Then you are blessed.”

Gakpo feeling at home

In fairness, this doesn’t just feel like empty words from Gakpo. Ever since he’s arrived at the club, the Netherlands international has looked happy and relaxed.

For the most part, that good feeling has extended to his performances on the pitch, too.

Gakpo stepped into an extraordinarily tough situation at Liverpool at the start of the year. With the Reds losing regularly and seemingly in desolate shape, the former PSV skipper never got his head down.

It would have been easy for him to look for excuses and hide, but Gakpo never did that. He kept plugging away and became a big reason for Liverpool’s turnaround in fortunes.

The presence of his national team captain – Virgil van Dijk – undoubtedly helped this settling in period.

But Gakpo has since become a popular member of the team. With plenty of Klopp’s first-team now in and around a similar age, the hope will be that the likes of Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez and Ryan Gravenberch can continue to grow at the club together.

As he embarks on his first full season at Liverpool, Cody hasn’t quite managed to continue is fantastic form of the last campaign.

But having been asked to play in midfield at times, the Dutchman has shown just how valuable he can be. By the sounds of it, Gakpo is settled and in it for the long-haul at Anfield. And that’s fantastic news.
