Pundit questions what Jurgen Klopp is doing with £43m Liverpool player vs Brentford

Phil Thompson has questioned Jurgen Klopp’s decision to start Cody Gakpo in the midfield for Liverpool against Brentford this afternoon.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official Twitter account, the former Anfield star was puzzled over why the Dutch attacker was chosen to start in the midfield alongside Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Thompson said: “We don’t really know where Gakpo is going to play, will he play on the left or will he play in the middle with Endo? It’s going to be strange how they line up.”

With Alexis Mac Allister out through suspension and the likes of Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara also out, an injury crisis has once again hit Liverpool.

And as a result, Klopp has made the decision to switch things up, with Gakpo joining the part in what is likely to be a 4-2-3-1 formation for the Reds.

Indeed, Gakpo has played a similar role before for Liverpool, though supporters will be far from pleased with the decision that has been made today against Brentford.

The £43m attacker is one of the most versatile players in Liverpool’s squad, though even Gakpo himself will admit that starting in midfield is an unusual decision.

Whilst it is likely that the winger is starting behind Darwin Nunez in the attacking midfield role in a 4-2-3-1, such a position could have been entrusted with a more suitable candidate.

As a result, Liverpool could now struggle for points this afternoon against Brentford, with the decision to play Gakpo in the midfield an unusual one, to say the least.
